Research Tools: Wildcards

Wildcards and Truncation symbols are excellent search tools when you are looking up a topic or keyword with multiple spellings or endings. The most common wildcard symbols are:

Boolean Searching is supported by most online databases and search engines. It is can be used to broaden or narrow your topic searches.

Searching an Online Library Database

After you have selected a database, use some keywords from your prewriting to find articles that relate to your topic.

Once you hit search you may find that the database returns hundreds or thousands of articles that include your keyword(s). To decrease some of this volume try using the "refine your results" option. You can ensure that your results are scholarly (or peer reviewed), full text, or published after a specific date.
